Valorant Review - Looks Familiar, Feels Different

If CS:GO and Overwatch has a love child, that's Valorant.

Rumours have been going around for a while about Riot Games' new FPS title, known as "Project A". The official trailer was announced last with a brief gameplay demonstration. Since then, players have been dying to see this unique FPS game.

After only a few months, Riot Games released its closed beta, and its official name "Valorant".

Valorant is a competitive 5 v 5 FPS game. It has a collection of characters and each of them has different abilities. The concept sounds very similar to another FPS hit "Overwatch", but Valorant is not just an Overwatch lookalike.

My first impression with Valorant is not so good, the graphics look outdated in 2020 standard, the animation is not fancy, but smooth. That's the keyword here, smooth.

The game experience is very smooth, especially the shooting experience. From the surface, it has a very similar shooting mechanism as CS:GO, but it feels a lot better. Shooting feels a lot more consistent, shots always register onto the enemy. In other FPS games, sometimes you can miss a shot that seems to hit a target, in Valorant, it doesn't happen.

Valorant's gameplay is also really fun and addictive, giving each character 4 abilities makes the game a lot more fun and tactical, each character has different playstyles. It adds lots of variety to the game.

Even though it looks cartoony, Valorant is a very competitive and mechanic intense game. It carries the competitiveness from CS:GO, every keypress, every move needs to be well thought. If you are a hardcore FPS gamer, this game is definitely for you.

For all those casual gamers, you can still have lots of fun, switching characters, casting different abilities, it's easy to pick up and play, but hard to master.

Valorant's beta launch is generally successful, but there are some downfalls. Many players experience connection issues, it usually happens when players try to launch the game. It can take many tries to just join the server, sometimes connection issue also happens in-game, it doesn't affect the game experience that much, but it's just a sidenote to remember.

Balancing can also be a small issue, the game hasn't been around for too long, meta hasn't been defined very clearly, but there are some characters that are seemingly stronger than others. When time passes by, players will start getting a better understanding of the game, until then, there is really not much to complain.

Overall, Valorant is a very good game, it absorbs from both Overwatch and CS:GO, makes the game fun and competitive. While this game is already hyped-up before its release, I can imagine it being the next biggest video game hit.
