Since the announcement from last year, Valorant has been building up the hype quickly, until it explodes on the Beta Launch Day. But why, what makes Valorant so hyped up? What attracts 1.7 million viewers on Twitch?
Riot Games' Influence
Riot Games has some serious hit titles, including the long-lasting MOBA game League of Legends and the recently trendy strategy game Teamfight Tactics. It already has a good amount of loyal fans. So naturally, when Riot Games make an announcement, players will turn their heads.
Riot Games is not a small indie game studio, they have the capabilities to make decent, promising games. The reputation definitely helps Riot, not only within North America but also all over the world, Riot Games is a renowned gaming company.
Valorant and League of Legends
It's a cliche but we just can't simply ignore how much influence League of Legends have on Riot Games. In fact, It's better to say League of Legends is pretty much the face of Riot Games.
Both Riot's new games Teamfight Tactics and Legends of Runeterra took the character designs from League of Legends, but Valorant is the first Riot's game that doesn't belong to the League of Legends ecosystem. Valorant is also an FPS game, something Riot has never done for the past, both Teamfight Tactics and Legends of Runeterra are pretty much the by-products of League of Legends, something Riot has been doing for the past century, now Riot is going into a new area, an area with lots of unknown to the players.
The MOBA and FPS trend
Most of the time it's difficult to come with something completely new, but improving an existing idea is a lot easier.
Valorant is a game that's built based on CS:GO and Overwatch, two huge titles in the FPS genre, which grabs lots of attention from the FPS community. Valorant is also advertised as a MOBA like shooter game, with its 5 v 5 competitive gameplay, that also gets attention from the MOBA community.
FPS and MOBA are pretty the biggest gaming genres out there (beside battle royale), it really gives Valorant a good start even before its launch.
Fantastic Marketing
Riot Games has some insane ideas when it comes to marketing.
Unlike other games that draw random people to get into beta anonymously, Riot partnered up with Twitch streamers. If you want to enter the Beta, you'll have to watch their stream and it's not guaranteed.
It really gives lots of exposures to Valorant, it's the newest hot game that everyone is talking about, of course, streamers would want to stream this game non-stop. That, in turn, gives Valorant even more exposure.
Meanwhile, thousands of gamers were waiting beside their computers, watching Twitch streams and hoping to get a beta key. It's a game not everyone is able to play, high demand paired with limited supply makes gamers thirsty.
The influence of gaming media
There are tons of gamers out there, want to become the next Ninja.
People want to hop on a trendy train, and hoping they will be the next multi-million gaming star. Valorant, a game with so much already built hype, is the perfect starting point and an easy target for many people.
These are just some basic analysis for Valorant, there will be more articles soon to talk about its potential popularity and the reason behind it. Stay tuned!
