Valorant VS Overwatch VS CS:GO

Updated: Apr 18, 2020

Valorant has been out for almost a week now (beta), while some players were lucky enough to get a key and play the game, many players can only experience the gameplay through streaming services.

The first impression many players have is that this game really looks like some other popular FPS titles, more precisely, Overwatch and CS:GO.

The first time players get this impression is probably from Riot Games' trailer, a tactical shooter that offers a roster of characters, each with unique abilities, that just sounds too close to Overwatch. Besides, the game core functions are very close to CS:GO, the shooting mechanism, the game modes and even how players can purchase guns before each round.

Even though Valorant undoubtedly took inspirations from Overwatch and CS:GO, it does feel a bit different at a closer look.

Valorant VS CS:GO

Valorant's core mechanics are pretty much borrowed from CS:GO. The shooting feels very similar but better. The gameplay is very smooth and consistent, every bullet seems to register will register. Compared to other shooting games, where there are inconsistencies with the bullet not hitting the enemies, even though it looks like it should.

What separates Valorant from CS:GO is the fact that each character is unique.

In different scenarios, some characters work better than others, which makes it situational and fun. There is always a bit of uncertainty.

Valorant VS Overwatch

Overwatch is famous for its cartoony graphics, characters selection and most importantly, the abilities each character has.

The dynamic is unique in Overwatch, each character has a different weapon and a specific role, they can do something other characters can't do. With a variety of abilities, it can shape the match in different ways, and all these make overwatch both fun and tactical.

Valorant does offer the character selections with unique abilities, but they all access the same weapon pool.

Each player can earn money by defeating playing and winning the previous round, then decide to purchase weapons if needed before each round. That means the roles may not be as important and pronounced as in Overwatch, especially when no one has their abilities available.

In Valorant, even a character that's more focused on healing abilities can still solo defeat enemies.

Abilities also work a little bit differently here in Valorant. There are 3 types of abilities. The first type works more like gadgets, players need to purchase abilities before using them, and they have a limited quantity depending on how many did you purchase. Once you run out, you'll have to purchase them again before the next round, along with purchasing your guns.

The second type is like how abilities work in Overwatch, players get the abilities one they enter the game, they can use it unlimited times, but there is a cooldown before you can use it next time. It's also free of charge.

The third type is the ultimate skills, players need to gather 7 skill points to charge it, by either defeating an enemy or absorbing a skill point orb that scatters on the map. Once there are 7 skill points, players can cast their ultimate skill and deplete all the skill points.

Valorant's ability mechanics make players need to be more considerable before using their abilities, every ability matters since they are not easy to access like Overwatch. If you waste an ability, you may need to wait a long time to recharge or wait until the next round to purchasing them again.

This leads to a slower pace and makes the game more tactical.
